A 81 Km- Temps 1h15

Celtic place of dwelling, colonized by the Greeks, Arles becomes Roman by the grace of Cesar who establishes there veterans of its legions in 46 before JC.

It is the first golden age of « small Rome of Gaules » which will be a great religious centre of the first times of Christendom.
Ruined and wounded by the invasions of the high Middle Age, the city reappears in the12th century and the splendour of its mediaeval monuments testifies of the vitality and the richness of this time.

The 17th and 18th centuries see the construction of innumerable private mansions, which make, still today, the charm of the old centre, where several registered monuments are gathered, a 2000 years heritage of history.
Since 1981 the whole of the Roman and Romance monuments are registered by UNESCO and belong to the world inheritance of humanity.

This privilege granted to the Lords remains only the name deformed by the use in PRAFRANCE. This field of a surface of 34 hectares, located at Générargues, 11 km in the south-west of Alès and 2 km in the north of Anduze, corresponds geographically to a basin whose bottom consists of modern alluvia of quaternary and whose walls are made of limestones of various periods and granite. Not far from Prafrance, Gardon spawning time a passage through narrow valleys, granitic upstream (Roucan) and limestones downstream (rocks of Anduze). Benefiting from the Mediterranean climate, Prafrance receives on average 1100 mm of water per year, but the mode of water can be irregular, torrential storms or dryness, therefore the park obtained permanent irrigation canals, of which the length exceeds 5 km.

It is within this privileged framework that the Bamboo plantation of Prafrance was created by a Cevennes inhabitant passionate of botany: Eugene Mazel. Mazel had made fortune in the trade of spices which were imported directly from Asia. This activity enabled him to let come from these remote countries almost unknown plants of its time, to Europe.

Henceforth Aigues-Mortes, a withdrawn mediaeval witness, evolves and surprises, crossing inexorably wars, conflicts, times of peace, centuries of glory and misery. Its towers and ramparts are marked by time, haunted by the mystery of their resistance.

Nowadays, Aigues-Mortes preserves its traditional games with bulls. Centre of Camargue gastronomy, it turns to the Mediterranean sea and combines the secret of the past and the charm of the future.

This term indicates a complex entity, at the same time material since it deals of a castle and a fortified borough, but such an emblematic because it is the heart of the stronghold, of the seigniorial power. The castrum is thus always a unit made up of a castle and a dwelling, therefore fortified, which is always associated to it.

The castle itself gathers a square or rectangular keep, a rectangular home, a castral vault and dependences, the whole being protected by a strong enclosure. The Guerin Guard thus kept his mediaeval structure but the houses are dated from 16th century, following a rebuilding of the village. In 1929 the whole village of the Guerin Guard was registered as a remarkable « site », and the turn-keep, the castle and the Michaelmas church as « Historic Monuments « .

Today, the castle of Aujac makes it possible to discover a site, an environment and a history, on this route dating back to 1270 and known under the name of Val Cezarencha.

Cheylard d’Aujac is a rural fortress at human size, which controlled formerly human, historical and cultural displacements along the high valley of Cèze. This high Cevennes place, located at the northern point of the Gard Département, is characterized by a rich person mediaeval inheritance in an area with mainly Gallo-Roman heritage.
